The Youth in Our Program Our participants come from the Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond public schools, and have completed a Street Law or similar course in their high school. These are inner-city young people who are motivated and interested in the law, but who have not been provided with the preparation necessary to pursue higher education or a fulfilling career.
Classroom Instruction On the U.C. Berkeley Law School campus, students take courses entitled: Race, the Constitution, and the Supreme Court; Conflict Management; Trial Skills; and The World of Work. They also learn about using a law library, applying for jobs, and pursuing higher education.
Internships Each student works as an intern with a law firm, nonprofit, or other law-related organization, or a government agency. They experience first-hand the workings of a professional office, develop practical skills, and meet people who can serve as role models and mentors.
Projects and Special Activities Participants attend leadership development activities and field trips, meet community leaders, conduct mock trials, and celebrate their completion of the Program at a graduation ceremony.
Mentors Each participant is matched with a mentor who provides guidance and encouragement after the Summer Program ends.
Stipends Each participant receives a $1,400 to $1,500 stipend, depending on the length of the program.
Follow-up We follow up with graduates for three years after the Summer Program ends to assess their progress and provide continued support.
