Mock Trials Materials
The Mock Trials textbook and teacher’s manual are designed to facilitate the preparation and enactment of two mock trials: (1) a civil trial dealing with the transmission of HIV, and (2) a criminal trial dealing with a death caused by drunk driving. The background provided by a Street Law course or other similar course is helpful but not necessary for students to benefit from these materials. This curriculum is well suited for average high school students, and may be effective with advanced middle school students.
In addition to witness statements, evidence, and procedures for the two trials, this curriculum includes chapters on jury selection, media coverage of trials, jury decision making, and evidence rules.
The Mock Trials textbook and teacher’s manual may be purchased from the National Textbook Company. Call (800) 323-4900 and ask for Justice in Action: Mock Trials in the Classroom (Student Text: ISBN 0-538-69071-2; Teacher’s Manual: ISBN 0-538-69072-0).
Race and the Constitution Materials
The materials on Race and the Constitution guide students in analyzing the text of U.S. Supreme Court cases, as well as the surrounding historical circumstances. Cases discussed include Dred Scott v. Stanford, Plessy v. Ferguson, Korematsu v. United States, Brown v. Board of Education, Regents of the University of California v. Bakke and Plyler v. Doe. Topics include slavery, the creation of the U.S. Constitution, abolition, segregation, the Japanese Internment, the Civil Rights movement during the '50s and '60s, affirmative action, and discrimination against immigrants. Students are encouraged to make connections between the past and present with regard to issues of equality and race relations.
