Participants attend classes for 15 days on the U.C. Berkeley Law School campus, where they have the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a dynamic and diverse University campus.  Law students and alumni from U.C. Berkeley and other Bay Area law schools conduct the courses.  The following is a summary of the curriculum, created specifically for our Program:

Race, the Supreme Court, and the Constitution provides an understanding of how the U.S. Constitution and the Supreme Court have addressed issues of racial equality throughout history. Students examine the legal reasoning of significant Supreme Court cases as well as the surrounding economic and political circumstances.  The course addresses current issues such as affirmative action.  [For information on the materials for this course, click here.]

The World of Work looks at how the law affects the workplace, including workplace safety, unions, civil rights, and sexual harassment.  Students also learn practical skills such as handling workplace problems, writing a resume, and interviewing for jobs.

Conflict Management uses role-playing, interactive exercises, and discussions to help students develop communication skills and learn how to resolve interpersonal problems peacefully.  Students also learn about the role of negotiation and mediation in the legal system.

Mock Trials: Students act as attorneys, witnesses, and other trial participants in two mock trials:  (1) a civil trial concerning transmission of the HIV virus, and (2) a criminal trial dealing with a death caused by drunk driving. This course helps students learn about the role of jury trials, understand trial procedures, and develop skills in problem-solving and public speaking.  [For information on the mock trials textbook and teacher’s manual, click here.]

Life Skills helps students discover and pursue career pathways that will be personally fulfilling to them.  Students explore their own interests and values, learn about college and careers, and hear talks by law-related professionals and community leaders.
